Meet our Students

Rebecca Swan

By sarah stenabaugh | August 16, 2018

Hometown: Langley, BC
Program: Online Master of Rehabilitation Science
Year in Program: 4

What inspired you to pursue your program?

I had been working for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) for 4 years (now 8 years) as their Athletic Therapist and during that time I successfully implemented on-site athletic therapy services. However, I recognized there was a great need among police departments for physical rehabilitation services.

Many police departments were interested in having similar services and I wanted to find a way to help support development in this area. Looking through the course outline of the program, I saw many courses that would help me further develop the services at our department, as well as help other police departments.

What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?

I am in the middle of collecting data for my major research project, which is investigating stakeholder perspectives on how to effectively implement physical rehabilitation programs in police departments. I am excited to see what I can learn from the data!

Best piece of advice

Do not be afraid of failure, it is how we build on it that makes us grow and develop. As long as you grow from it I do not think it can necessarily count as a failure!

First job

Fast Food – A&W

What’s next on your BC bucket list?

Heli-mountain biking at Retallack Lodge in the Kootenays next summer. It will be my graduation gift to myself!
