Program: Midwifery

What attracted you to your field?
There is a lot that attracted me to the field of midwifery but I think ultimately it was my desire to help support women and families during birth. My own birth experiences profoundly impacted me and they led me to want to support and care for others in a direct and tangible way. As a past educator, teaching and learning are also important to me and midwifery enables me to do both. So much of what we do is teaching and every mother, birth, and family teaches us something new. Being able to care for others during such a life changing event and having the honour of welcoming new life into this world is pretty amazing.
In 10 years, what UBC moment will you still be talking about?
In my third year, I travelled to Nepal with two of my classmates and our preceptor where we worked in a rural hospital alongside the staff and students, helping provide maternity care. Nepal was life changing for me in many ways, as a student and as a global citizen. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to do an international placement while at UBC.
What’s next for you?
My plan after graduation is to begin practicing midwifery here in BC in the Fraser Valley.
As you look ahead, what inspires you?
Kindness inspires me. It is such a simple gesture but often forgotten or overlooked. I am inspired by those who have shown kindness to me and those who continue to be kind in an often unkind world.
Name one thing on your bucket list.
There is a big world to see and exploring it is at the top of my bucket list.
