Program: MSc. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Class of 2018
Hometown: Moncton, N.B.
What attracted you to your field of study or research?
During the course of my degree, I took a few classes that really captivated me, such as metabolism, genetics and microbial physiology. I became absorbed by both human and bacterial physiology. They’re both so incredibly complex and there’s something about it that made me want to know more about how things worked on a molecular level. I also had a couple of really incredible opportunities to work as an undergrad student lab assistant in a laboratory dealing with secondary metabolism and pathogenicity in the bacterial genus Streptomyces. I learned invaluable skills and applications that I will definitely be able to apply during my MSc., and it was also this opportunity that attracted me to the idea of pursuing research!
What excites you about the upcoming year?
I grew up in a much smaller town than Vancouver, so I’m really excited to explore this city and to meet some really great people! I’m also really excited about focusing my studies in an area I’m really passionate about!
What’s one thing we might be surprised to learn about you?
I love to play the piano and guitar!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Graduated with my MSc., hopefully, and either pursuing a PhD or an MD! I love research but I also love working with and helping people!
Best piece of advice: Be kind to yourself and others.
Last vacation destination: Disney World in Orlando, Florida!
