What attracted you to your field?
I was attracted to cancer research because the topic of cancer hits home for everyone — including myself. It’s inevitable that we will all know someone who is diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime. This is why I wanted to contribute my time and energy towards the discovery of a cure for cancer.
In 10 years, what UBC moment will you still be talking about?
I will definitely be talking about all the amazing UBC grad students I met through the events run by the graduate student societies. I could never forget all of my UBC moments with my peers playing beach volleyball, enjoying hikes, sharing laughter over happy-hour beers, and discussing the adversities that come with grad life. I will always be grateful that UBC is located in one of the most beautiful cities in the world with liberation found right outside on the mountains and beaches!
What’s next for you?
I must go travel and see the world. After five years of being in a lab with few days off, I’m sure I will find the outside world mysterious and new! Jokes aside, I will be going on a road trip to every province in Canada (very excited to see the Northern lights)!
As you look ahead, what (or who) inspires you?
I get inspiration from observing and interacting with the limitless diversity of people and their worlds. When I experience, see, hear, and learn about different perspectives, personal histories, and cultures, the lessons and philosophies I take from it inspire me to pursue new things, take risks, and keep on learning.
Name one thing on your bucket list.
I really want to build a house with my own two hands in the countryside. A house with a big library and beautiful bathroom—two quiet places to think and read in peace.
