What does the Faculty’s vision Transforming Health for Everyone mean to you as a resident doctor?
My journey as a pediatrics resident reflects a commitment to addressing challenges faced by rural and remote patients. Originally from the Northwest Territories and having completed my medical training in northern Ontario, I’ve witnessed the struggles of patients who are transferred far from their support systems, who are dealing with language barriers, culture shock or financial strain. UBC’s vision, “Transforming Health for Everyone,” has taught me to go beyond diagnoses and understand unique patient needs and to advocate effectively through collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues, including social workers and Indigenous health liaisons.
What’s your favourite part about training in the community you’re in?
Vancouver is one of the largest urban centers to train in as a resident physician. After spending most of my time in rural and remote areas of Canada, I was eager to learn from the numerous specialists and subspecialists in pediatrics who provide care for patients with complex health needs from across B.C. and the Yukon Territory. Every day that I train at BC Children’s Hospital, I further develop the skillsets needed to become a well-rounded general pediatrician. Further, Vancouver’s climate and surrounding nature has allowed me to continue enjoying my favourite outdoor activities all-year-round including hiking, kayaking, fishing and keeping an eye out for orca whales in the Pacific!
