UBC’s Dr. Ryan Flannigan has received the 2022 Rising Star in Urology Research Award from the American Urological Association and the Urology Care Foundation.

Dr. Ryan Flannigan
Dr. Flannigan, an assistant professor in the faculty of medicine’s department of urological sciences, aims to establish a regenerative therapy platform to grow sperm from a patient’s stem cells in a laboratory setting. He and his team are leveraging computational modelling and 3D bioprinting in pursuit of a regenerative therapeutic approach for male infertility.
“I am very grateful and honoured to receive this award,” said Dr. Flannigan, also the director of the Male Reproduction and Sexual Medicine Research Program at UBC and senior research scientist at the Vancouver Prostate Centre. “It is a reflection of the incredible students, colleagues and collaborators that I work very closely with on a day-to-day basis in this research program that we have built together.”
For more than 15 years, the Rising Stars in Urology Research Award program has encouraged urologists to contribute to their field as both surgical specialists and scientists investigating causes, prevention, treatment, and cures that will improve patients’ lives.
The award program provides up to five years of supplemental salary support to urologists who have successfully competed for career development awards from the National Institutes of Health or other major funding organizations.
