Joy Russell, a UBC clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Practice, has been named Family Physician of the Year in B.C. by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).
Dr. Russell — who has been a physician in Vancouver for 33 years — is one of 10 family doctors across Canada being honoured with the Family Physician of the Year designation in 2017. Each will receive the Reg L. Perkin Award, which recognizes family doctors across the nation who provide exceptional care to their patients, contribute to the well-being of their communities, and demonstrate leadership in family medicine education and research.
“We commend this year’s award recipients for their enduring efforts to promote high-quality patient care, provide leadership in their home communities, and support the future of family medicine through education and mentorship,” says CFPC President David White. “The passion and commitment they bring to the profession of family medicine are an inspiration to their peers and to the next generation of family doctors.”
Since 2014, Dr. Russell’s practice has been located at the UBC Health Clinic, where she teaches family medicine residents, as well as medical and nurse practitioner students. She is also active in the Vancouver Division of Family Practice, representing the Division on several committees and working groups. In 2015, Dr. Russell received the St. Paul’s Residency Program Teaching Award, an honour awarded by UBC family medicine residents.
All 2017 Family Physicians of the Year will be honoured with the Reg. L Perkin award on Friday, November 10, at the CFPC’s annual Awards Gala in Montreal, Quebec. The event takes place at Family Medicine Forum, which runs from November 8th to 11th in conjunction with Family Doctor Week in Canada celebrations taking place November 6th to 11th.
