Gavin Stuart, UBC’s Vice Provost Health and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, signed on March 14 a Memorandum of Understanding with Junhua Zhang, the Deputy Director General of China Ministry of Health Human Resources Development Center (HHRDC) to cooperate in expanding primary care and public health education in China.
As an important part of the health reform taking place in China, the government is focusing on the training of primary care physicians in community clinics and hospitals to tend to the general population’s health, to complement their current health system of tertiary-hospital based services.
The document, signed by Dr. Stuart and Mr. Zhang in Beijing, articulates the Faculty’s and the Chinese government’s mutual interest in promoting academic and education cooperation towards developing primary care and public health education in China.
The agreement marks the beginning of dialogue and will be followed by exchange visits between the two organizations for deeper understanding and exploration of tangible steps towards fulfilling the full intent of the goals stated in the document.
