Dr. Amina Zoubeidi
Last month, UBC’s faculty of medicine virtually celebrated the academic achievements and distinguished careers of faculty members during the Academic Gowns and Emeriti Recognition Ceremonies.
With last year’s event put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, two separate ceremonies were held in June to honour more than 100 faculty members who were promoted to professor, clinical professor or professor of teaching.
Dr. Amina Zoubeidi is one of them, recently promoted from associate professor to professor in the department of urologic sciences. She holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Cancer Therapy Resistance and is a member of the Vancouver Prostate Centre’s executive team and research counsel. She is also the academic director of Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute’s Medical Animal Facilities.
“I am honoured and humbled by this recognition,” said Dr. Zoubeidi. “My journey involved studying in three different languages and it has taught me that science is an amazing adventure, team work is imperative, and mentoring is absolute.”

Dr. Alex Scott was also recognized during the ceremony, promoted from associate professor to professor in the department of physical therapy. His research focuses on targeting new treatments for tendinopathy and chronic musculoskeletal pain. He also helped launch the Program for Excellence in Telerehabilitation Education and Research (PETER), which trains students in virtual care to expand physical therapy services in rural and remote areas across B.C.
“I’m truly grateful to receive this recognition from my colleagues for the work I’ve set out to achieve,” he said. “It puts the wind in my sails to keep moving forward and inspiring students as we continue on our learning journey here at UBC.”
Special recognition was also reserved for members who were granted emeritus or emerita status for the significant contributions over the course of their careers.
During his remarks, Dr. Dermot Kelleher, dean of the faculty of medicine and vice-president, health at UBC, congratulated the members on their academic excellence and service to the community.
“Today’s celebration reflects decades of your collective hard work, dedication, sacrifice and service,” he said. “All of you are changing the world by instilling knowledge and professionalism in those who you teach, through the discoveries you make, and in the way, you contribute to better health for everyone.”
