The Faculty of Medicine at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Faculty Lead, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (AREDI) in the Office of Student Affairs, MD Undergraduate Program. This is a 0.30 FTE (1.5 days per week) position for an approximately eight (8) month term with the possibility of extension.
The UBC Faculty of Medicine Strategic Plan, Building the Future: 2021 – 2026, commits to enhancing program accessibility and inclusion for learners who identify as members of underrepresented groups. The MDUP Student Affairs Faculty Lead, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (AREDI) position is responsible for the effective planning, development, and implementation of programs and services within MDUP Student Affairs that offer diverse approaches to supporting the needs of MD students from equity-deserving groups (EDGs) who have been historically, persistently, and systemically marginalized. This position may also provide direct support to MD students from EDGs.
The MDUP Student Affairs Faculty Lead, AREDI position will collaborate closely with MD students, members of the MDUP Student Affairs (including faculty and administrative staff), the Faculty of Medicine Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (REDI), UBC Centre for Accessibility (CFA), and various faculty and staff partners within the MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP), Postgraduate Medical Education, the Faculty of Medicine, and the University.
The Faculty Lead, AREDI, Student Affairs position will be responsible for Strategic Leadership by providing leadership on timely Anti-racism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion topics and how services and programs within Student Affairs and the MDUP can embody wise practices in this domain. Connecting and collaborating with other post-secondary institutions /medical schools on effective practices and approaches to addressing similar challenges in the domain of anti-racisim, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Will be responsible for Administrative and Faculty/Staff Engagement by partnering with Indigenous and Black cultural support staff to generate thriving communities and a culture of accessibility and inclusion, including mentorship opportunities, orientation events, and the successful transition of graduating MD students into postgraduate residency at UBC and support the ongoing learning and development of MDUP Student Affairs faculty and administrative team to support MD students from all EDGs.
The successful candidate will hold an MD designation preferably or an equivalent designation
The ideal candidate should have a broad understanding of the experiences and barriers faced by historically and systemically marginalized groups, and evidence-based practices for mitigating these barriers; the ability to engage comfortably in discussions on anti-racism and discrimination, equity, diversity, and inclusion, using current discourse; an understanding of the historical and contemporary impacts of discrimination in post-secondary education and the Canadian medical system; the ability to work effectively and productively with people of diverse perspectives; skill in understanding and creating learning environments that meet the needs of both dominant groups and historically marginalized groups, and effectively promote the growth of both groups toward cultural change. They should recognize and address personal and institutional assumptions and behaviors that create barriers to inclusion; and have experience and/or a commitment to working collaboratively with Indigenous support units at UBC and the Faculty of Medicine.
The candidate should actively seek to understand the climate of reconciliation in Canada and at UBC, and its relationship with UBC’s commitment to equity. Additionally, they should possess collaborative leadership, interpersonal skills, and conflict-management skills; the ability to effectively communicate, navigate difficult conversations, build relationships, interact, and collaborate with compassion, respect, and understanding with all members within the Faculty of Medicine and at UBC. Finally, the candidate should be committed to continual learning as the EDI discourse is constantly evolving.
