The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Associate Dean, MD Admissions. This position will be approximately 0.7 FTE (3.5 days per week) for a five (5) year term, with possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review, and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the Faculty at an appropriate rank.
The Doctor of Medicine Undergraduate Program in the UBC Faculty of Medicine prepares students to meet the health challenges of tomorrow. UBC learners receive the training necessary for a career founded on evidence-based practice, critical reflection, lifelong learning, and an ability to deliver care in a professional manner.
The UBC MD Undergraduate Program is designed to respond to the diverse and ever-changing health care needs in British Columbia, Canada and the world. It is Canada’s first fully distributed undergraduate medical program, delivering medical education in four distinct sites across the province. This allows students to learn in urban centres as well as the most remote communities in British Columbia. This model helps train competent and well-rounded graduates who are prepared to work in any clinical environment.
Reporting to the Vice Dean, Education, the Associate Dean, MD Admissions will be responsible for overseeing and executing the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s MD Undergraduate Program recruitment, admissions, and enrollment strategies. The Associate Dean provides leadership to the MD Admissions team, develops policies, enhances outreach efforts, and ensures a seamless application process to attract and retain a diverse and talented student body. The Associate Dean collaborates with faculty, staff, and other departments to align admissions goals with the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s MD Undergraduate Program mission and strategic priorities.
The Associate Dean, MD Admissions will provide leadership in advancing the Faculty’s strategic plan and goals that align with the University. Equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice are essential to academic excellence, as well as to foster an inclusive community for voices that have been historically underrepresented or discouraged; the successful candidate will contribute to fostering an environment that promotes inclusivity and embodies values of respect, integrity, compassion, collaboration, and equity.
The successful candidate will have an MD or equivalent designation, and demonstrated ability to engage colleagues (in achieving the Faculty’s and University’s strategic plans and priorities, as well as align with institutional policies and procedures); demonstrates passion for continuous quality improvement; demonstrates ability to build, manage, and maintain productive and collaborative working relationships across all levels, both in and out of an organization; demonstrates experience in team building, coaching, and mentoring, guiding and empowering/enabling others; demonstrates skills in conflict resolution, negotiation, mediation, and change management; experience in overseeing resources and managing finances; experience functioning in a fast-paced environment; and demonstrated ability to facilitate information sessions, workshops, seminars, working groups, and chair committees, councils, and meetings.
In addition, the successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and, respect of diverse perspectives. Experience in collaborating and bringing forward projects with diverse groups, including colleagues, students, and/or partners, is valued.
