The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Associate Dean, Fraser. This position will be approximately 0.6 FTE (3 days per week) for a five (5) year term, with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review, and is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to the Faculty.

The UBC Faculty of Medicine is committed to fostering excellence in education, research, and service that contributes to the health of individuals and communities locally, nationally, and internationally. The Faculty of Medicine, together with its partners including British Columbia’s health authorities, provides innovative programs in the areas of health and life sciences through a province-wide delivery model. The Faculty teaches students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels and generates more than $450 million in research funding each year.

Reporting jointly to the Vice Dean, Research, FoM and the Vice Dean, Education, FoM, the Associate Dean, Fraser will be responsible for the overall strategic leadership, research leadership and ensuring that regional academic and research initiatives are staffed, resourced, and managed in the Fraser region in order to maximize and leverage teaching and research opportunities. Faculty of Medicine investigators are actively engaged in innovative, leading-edge research, on university and hospital campuses across the Province of British Columbia. The goal of this research is to create knowledge and advance learning that will make a vital contribution to the health of individuals and communities, locally, nationally, and internationally. Within UBC, the Faculty of Medicine obtains over 50% of all research funding with the majority of this research being undertaken at hospital campuses.

For Fraser-based education activities, initiatives and programs, the Associate Dean, Fraser will support the strategic goals and plans of the Faculty’s education programs: the MD Undergraduate Program; Postgraduate Medical Education residency training programs, and Health Professions Programs, working closely with associate deans, department heads and school directors, and other senior leaders as it relates to implementation of education programs and initiatives in the Fraser region; exploration of opportunities for integrated medical and health teaching and training; continuous quality improvement; and, internal and external relations in the Fraser community.

The Associate Dean, Fraser will provide leadership in advancing the Faculty’s strategic plan and goals that align with the University. The successful candidate will have an MD or equivalent designation, and demonstrated ability to enhance work in the areas of medical and health professions education and research; demonstrated ability to engage colleagues (in achieving the Faculty’s and University’s strategic plans and priorities); demonstrated ability to promote strong partnerships and foster collaboration between, and with, internal and external bodies; experience functioning in a fast-paced environment; experience with research programs, grants and contracts; skills in conflict resolution, negotiation, mediation, and change management; and the ability to build, manage, and maintain productive and collaborative working relationships across all levels, both in and out of an organization. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own, and a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
