Assistant Dean, Island Medical Program (IMP)

The UBC Faculty of Medicine’s MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP), at The University of British Columbia (UBC), invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean, Island Medical Program (IMP).

The UBC Faculty of Medicine’s MD Undergraduate Program (MDUP) plays a critical role in training the health professionals of the future. Students have the opportunity to learn medicine at one of four geographically distinct program sites – the Island Medical Program, the Northern Medical Program, the Southern Medical Program and the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program – where they gain invaluable training and mentoring from highly skilled clinicians.

This is an administrative role with a three-year term appointment, with potential for renewal for a second term, subject to satisfactory review. The position has a time commitment of approximately 0.6 FTE, equivalent to three (3) days per week. The incumbent must have sufficient protected time during the working week to fulfill the requirements of this role.

This position is based in Victoria, BC. Travel is expected within the Vancouver Island region, with occasional travel to Vancouver and other areas of BC, as required.

Reporting to the Regional Associate Dean (RAD VI), the Assistant Dean, IMP provides specific operational leadership for undergraduate medical education in the Island Medical Program (IMP) to ensure the delivery of a high-quality educational and inclusive experience for learners across all four years of the curriculum. The Assistant Dean, IMP maintains good communication and collaborative working relationships with a wide range of partners across the province, including IMP faculty and staff, department and division heads, administrators in Vancouver Island clinical training sites, as well as educational leaders at other program sites. The Assistant Dean, IMP also liaises with MD Student Affairs on matters related to IMP learners and fosters and maintains a good working relationship with learners.  

The successful candidate will hold an MD or PhD designation. The successful candidate must hold a UBC faculty appointment or be eligible to hold a UBC faculty appointment.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviors, demonstrate familiarity with educational program development and course/accreditation standards, and have knowledge of the undergraduate medical education curriculum, preferably with experience in teaching.

The deadline for applications will be March 21, 2025.The anticipated start date for this position is May 1, 2025, or upon a date to be mutually agreed. The expected pay (or pay range) for this position is $90,000 per annum at 0.6 FTE.
