William Schreiber
William E. Schreiber, a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, assumed the presidency of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) during its annual meeting this month.
Dr. Schreiber, a consultant pathologist at Vancouver General Hospital, is also the Medical Director of the Provincial Toxicology Centre, which performs specialized drug testing for the province of British Columbia.
An ASCP Board member since 2006, Dr. Schreiber has served on the Society’s Council on Clinical Chemistry, the Fellow Council, the CheckPath Clinical Pathology Committee, the Annual Meeting Committee, and the Commission on Continuing Professional Development. He is on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Clinical Pathology and Lab Tests Online. He also represented the ASCP on the American Board of Pathology committee dealing with content specifications for its maintenance of certification process.
“ASCP is the organization that represents the entire clinical laboratory team – pathologists, technologists, lab scientists and students,” Dr. Schreiber said. “In the collaborative environment of modern health care, we are stronger when we work together. I am honored to serve as ASCP’s president for the coming year.”
Dr. Schreiber received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Oberlin College, Ohio, and his doctor of medicine degree from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. He completed a residency and research fellowship at the University of Washington.
Since joining the faculty at UBC, he has committed a large part of his career to the education of medical students, residents, and colleagues. He directed the medical biochemistry residency program for 10 years and served as Associate Dean for undergraduate education from 1999 to 2002. He has received a number of teaching awards from students and peers, as well as recognition from professional organizations for contributions to continuing medical education.
Founded in 1922 in Chicago, ASCP is a medical professional society with more than 100,000 member board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologists, pathology residents and fellows, laboratory professionals, and students.
