Deborah Money
The award was presented at the 30th anniversary celebration of the Women of Distinction Awards on May 28 in Vancouver.
Dr. Money was recognized for her significant contributions as a woman’s health researcher, physician, leader and mentor. She is internationally recognized for her ground-breaking work in reproductive infectious diseases. She led BC’s research to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission and through her leadership in patient care, transmission of HIV from the mother to newborn in BC has essentially been eradicated.
As VP of Research at BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre, Dr. Money recognizes that the causes and consequences of diseases such as HIV/AIDS are different for women compared to men and so is leading research responsive to these challenges. She was the inaugural executive director of the Women’s Health Research Institute, mentors emerging women health researchers and established the first fellowship for training in obstetrics and gynecology infectious disease in Canada.
In January 2013, Dr. Money was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The YWCA Women of Distinction Awards honour women whose outstanding achievements contribute to the well-being and future of our community.
