Dr. Brian Chung
The 2014 Program Director of the Year Award is given annually to a program director who has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing residency education as evidenced by innovation and impact beyond their program.
Since 1998, Dr. Chung has been the director of the Royal College residency program. Dr. Chung’s appreciation for the traditions of a well-run residency program began while training at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, in the late-1980s. Under the supervision of program director, Gene Dagnone, Dr. Chung was exposed to an individual who cared for his residents like members of his own family, and was inspired to guide residents through the early stages of their career.
Dr. Chung began his medical training at the University of Toronto, where he graduated from the school of medicine in 1984. He completed his residency in family medicine at North York General and the Women’s College Hospitals in Toronto. After three years of practice, he returned to the Royal College Emergency Medicine residency at Queen’s University which he completed in 1992. Dr. Chung’s first staff position was at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in the early-1990s.
The 2014 Program Director of the Year Award will be given out at the International Residency Education Awards Dinner on October 25, 2014 in Toronto.
