The Faculty of Medicine (FoM) at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications for the position of Director, Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES). The appointment is for an initial term of five (5) years with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review. This position has a time commitment of approximately 0.6 FTE, equivalent to three (3) days per week. The incumbent must have sufficient protected time during the working week to fulfill the requirements of the role. The position is expected to be filled by a candidate internal to UBC who currently holds a faculty appointment at UBC or is eligible to hold an appropriate faculty position in an academic unit.

The CHES is a research and education centre that strives to enhance the health of people and populations by supporting the educational practices of the health professions. CHES works to understand how health care providers learn and how health professions educators teach. CHES conducts research, builds capacity, and enables leadership. Canada as a whole has a reputation across the globe as a leader in the production of original, innovative, and critical health professions education research.

Reporting jointly to the Vice Dean, Research, FoM and the Vice Dean, Education, FoM, the Director, CHES is the academic lead in providing strategic leadership and support to the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (CHES). CHES’ mandate is to build educational, scholarly, and leadership capacity in the health professions, across British Columbia and beyond, through supporting the mentorship of individuals and fostering a culture of collaboration and scholarly thinking. Through collaborative leadership, the Director supports CHES’ efforts to shape theories and activities of learning in the health professions (e.g., creating new knowledge through research and informed innovation). The incumbent works closely with the Vice Dean, Education and the Vice Dean, Research to ensure alignment with the strategic plans of the Faculty of Medicine and of UBC and to ensure that academic and research initiatives at CHES are staffed, resourced, and managed to maximize health professions teaching, research and leadership offered by and supported by the centre.

Candidates should hold a PhD, MD or equivalent in a relevant discipline with a minimum of five years’ experience as an educator / researcher scholar including experience in the development, delivery, and implementation of collaborative health education research programs. Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of significant educational research achievement and innovation, commitment to multi-institute collaborations and ability to value the diversity of contributions from partners. Candidates should possess collaborative leadership skills, administrative experience, and ability to work effectively with learners, trainees, faculty and administrative leadership.

• A vision document (1-2-page) outlining a plan to enhance the vision and leadership of the provincial health professions education scholarship centre;
• Up to five recent publications that you would consider representative of how your research relates to the provincial health professions education scholarship centre;
• Publications record; and
• Names of two references.
