What inspired you to pursue your program?
There were a few things that drew me to the Reproductive and Developmental Sciences Program. Firstly, the program seemed to complement my undergraduate degree nicely and allowed opportunities for continued learning in areas that really interested me such as perinatal epidemiology and embryology. I was also extremely interested in working with my current supervisor, Dr. Lori Brotto, who is the Director of the UBC Sexual Health Laboratory and Professor in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Psychiatry.
The program itself has researchers from a wide range of disciplines, including reproductive cancers, pelvic pain, reproductive diseases, infertility, and clinical practice research. There are also opportunities for collaboration between fields, which is exciting.
Finally, I was blown away by the flexibility of the department, which supported my decision to pursue additional courses that better aligned with my research. It has made all the difference in what I’m now able to bring to the table in terms of my studies.
What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?
I’m most looking forward to collecting and analyzing my study data! I’m also really looking forward to the exciting opportunities that are available to share my research findings in local, national, and international settings, and to meet fellow research trainees and experts in my field from all over the world!
Best piece of advice
My best piece of advice would be to not let “Imposter Syndrome” get the better of you.
Never let it keep you from pursuing opportunities for learning or networking, because it’s through those experiences that you will start to become more confident in your knowledge and your role as a trainee.
First job
I started off with the odd babysitting job when I was around 12 years-old and loved it so much that I ended up going on to be a nanny for 5 years after graduating!
What’s next on your BC bucket list?
I’m extremely fortunate in that my research allows me to travel all around BC! However, out of all the locations my research is taking me, I’m definitely the most excited to visit Haida Gwaii. I’ve heard fantastic things about the nature, art, and people! Having moved here from Ontario, the landscapes of BC are still very new to me and every new place I’ve been so far has managed to surprise me.
