Hometown: Delta, BC
Program: Speech-Language Pathology
Year in Program: 2

What inspired you to pursue your program?
I was in a career I wasn’t passionate about and I knew I needed to change it. And then I got an amazing piece of advice – rather than think about what I wanted to do in my perfect job, to instead think about what I wanted to be and don’t stop looking for a job until it fulfills everything on that list. I wanted to be helping the community. I wanted to be passionate about my work and proud of what I worked for. I wanted to be continuously challenged and engaged. I wanted variety and security. I wanted to teach others and work with various age groups and populations.
I came across speech-language pathology and it had everything I was looking for. After observing a few speech-language pathologists and starting some volunteer work, I was hooked. It didn’t take me long to quit my job and go back to school.
At the end of it all, what’s most inspiring is the impact. To see someone surprise even themselves when they accomplish a goal and to know I helped make that happen – that is what keeps me going in the program.
What are you looking forward to most this upcoming year?
Combining what we’ve learned in class with what we’ve experienced in our externships, and polishing up our skills as clinicians. It was hard to imagine it all coming together when we started the program, but now that we’re done the first year it’s a completely different feeling.
Best piece of advice
I learned the importance of putting self-care first. Whether it’s spending quality time with friends, squeezing in a workout, fulfilling a hobby or getting outside, schedule it and commit to it.
First job
My first job was cleaning tables at White Spot and I ended up working there for over 10 years. I still don’t have the exact recipe for the famous Triple O sauce, but I did come out with the best of friends.
What’s next on your BC bucket list?
I love BC for all of its amazing outdoor activities. I’d love to be able to invest in some gear and start doing overnight hikes, including the Juan de Fuca, Westcoast Trail, and some hikes less travelled.
