The Canadian Association for Medical Education has bestowed Certificate of Merit awards to three members of the Faculty:
Savvas Nicolaou, Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology, developed Canada’s first fellowship in emergency radiology and was the only radiologist who has received the UBC Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund twice. In 2011, Dr. Nicolaou received the Bobby Miller Award for Excellence in Teaching from Vancouver Coastal Health.
Stan Bardal, Senior Instructor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics at UBC and the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria, is the Pharmacology theme director for the MD undergraduate program. He lectures frequently in the MD program, designed curricula and curricular materials, and co-authored a pharmacology textbook published by Elsevier. In 2010, Dr. Bardal received the Dr. Bruce Crawford Teaching Award from students of the Island Medical Program.
Andrea Gingerich, Research Associate in the Northern Medical Program, is a Problem-Based Learning tutor facilitating small group learning of core curriculum learning objectives for first- and second- year medical students. Gingerich provides faculty development for experienced PBL tutors and initial tutor training for new PBL tutors. She is a also a tutorial group facilitator for second-year students in the Doctor, Patient and Society course, which encourages students to explore psycho-sociocultural issues related to practicing medicine.
