Stipend for Rural Practice
The Department of Family Practice provides a stipend to students during their Rural Practice that takes place in the summer following Year 2. In 2011-2011 the stipend amount was $250 per week for a maximum of 8 weeks.
Students will be required to complete a stipend payment form in the Spring to be submitted to the Department of Family Practice. Students attending their Rural Practice rotation must bring a copy of their medical student licence as recognized by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia.

Note: StudentAidBC recipients must report this stipend under “Assistantships,” which includes income from stipends. Out-of-province student loan borrowers please check with your student assistance program.
Rural Practice Travel Subsidy
The Department of Family Practice also provides a travel subsidy for students completing their Rural Practice in communities designated by the BC Government as underserved communities.
Community listings can be found on MEDICOL (Medicine and Dentistry Integrated Curriculum On-Line). Funding for this program is raised through a variety of sources including the Rural Education Action Plan (REAP), a subsidiary agreement between the BC Government, the British Columbia Medical Association (BCMA) and the University of British Columbia. In 2010-2011 the amount of travel subsidy against original receipts was up to $800. This amount is subject to revision for 2011-2012.
For more information on these please contact the UBC Department of Family Medicine.
Third Year Stipend
A clinical stipend is paid to all Year 3 UBC MD students. The amount and availability of this stipend is contingent upon continued government funding and is subject to change or cancel at anytime. The stipend for 2011-2012 is $480 per month for the 12 month academic year.
**Government Student Loan Borrowers**
Note: StudentAidBC recipients must report this income as “stipends/assistantships” on their loan application. For out-of-province student loan borrowers please check with your student assistance program.
