The goal of the SSRP is to give students an opportunity to engage in biomedical health research. Students should benefit from their involvement and come away with new knowledge, new skills, and a better understanding of what biomedical health research entails.
General Notes on the Adjudication Process
- All applications are sent to an adjudication committee for evaluation.The committee is comprised of faculty members from the UBC Faculty of Medicine. Due to the volume of SSRP applications received, this committee is generally comprised of 15-20 individuals. If you are interested in being involved as a member of the adjudication committee please contact Linda Herbert (linda.herbert [at] ubc.ca)
- MD student applications and non-MD student applications are adjudicated separately (see Historical Application and Funding Information for more details on why this occurs)
- To be eligible for SSRP funding projects must be hypothesis-driven research
- Since the SSRP aims to provide opportunities to all students, including those seeking a first research experience, prior research experience is not included in the adjudication criteria
- Equal priority is given to clinical projects and basic science projects
- Projects involving retrospective analyses (looking up data in charts) or data entry are given equal priority as long as they are hypothesis driven
- Vague projects (such as participating in a large team with no specific role outlined) have traditionally been given lower priority.

*In addition, non-MD students will also have their academic merit (GPA) included in the evaluation process (2 points).
- Student GPAs for the most recent year of study (January 2012-January 2013) will be obtained from the SIS and used in the evaluation process. Students enrolled part-time will be evaluated on their previous 30 credits.
- A standardized scale will be used to assign points to a range of GPAs. Two points will be awarded to GPAs of 90% and above while 0 points will be awarded to GPAs less than 75%. As a result, non-MD students will be scored on a 12 point scale while MD students will be scored on a 10 point scale.
All applicants must be in good academic standing to be awarded funding. This will be confirmed for both MD and non-MD students as part of the adjudication process.
