2011 Medical Education Days for Health Professionals, hosted by the Office of Faculty Development, was held on June 9-10 in the Vancouver Coast Coal Harbor Hotel.
The Medical Education Days combined three previously separate events: the William Webber Luncheon Lecture in Medical Education, the medical education oral/poster presentations, and the annual Faculty Development Retreat.
Approximately 45 people across all regional sites attended the seventh William Webber lecture on June 9, delivered by Jason Frank, Associate Director in the Office of Education of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, on the subject, “The continuum myth: Why medical education is failing and how competencies are the answer.” [Watch video of the lecture.]
In the afternoon of June 9, UBC medical education researchers shared their work with colleagues at the oral and poster sessions. Presentations covered topics in medical and health professional education and related to undergraduate, postgraduate, faculty development and continuing professional development (click here to see the abstracts). Some of the best discussion undoubtedly occurred at the wine-and-cheese at day’s end.
The annual Faculty Development retreat began the following morning with opening remarks by Gavin Stuart, Dean of the Faculty and UBC’s Vice Provost Health. In his remarks, Dr. Stuart highlighted the crucial importance of faculty development in four key areas: making the shift to a new model of medical education based on competencies rather than an apprenticeship model; how this new model would look across the continuum; ensuring a common understanding among our teachers and preceptors across sites around program needs, learner expectations and competencies; and in inter-professional education.
Dr. Stuart then presented the awards and prizes to the winners of the Teaching Tips Contest and the Faculty Development Initiatives Grants.
The morning continued with panel discussions – “Faculty Development Across the Continuum” and “Faculty Development Across Sites”. The three themes for small group discussions that followed included: how will we define and measure success; the role of the central Faculty Development office versus that of the sites; and priorities for the coming years. Discussion was animated, and participants left with a renewed appreciation and enthusiasm for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
